4.5 stars- I'm docking half a star because of poor service last night. Long story short, I was given the wrong drink and when I returned it the employee had an attitude and didn't even heat up the replacement drink properly. This is absolutely my favorite place for breakfast in Rehoboth. Papillon was around loooong before the current crepe craze and it shows. The crepes are paper thin and the fillings are delicious. For breakfast, I like the cheese and tomato or the ham, egg, and cheese crepe. I generally dislike bananas but I love the banana, sour cream, and brown sugar crepe. I also like the strawberries, nutella, and whipped cream for dessert. The croissants are also awesome and they have several kinds. My favorite are the ham and cheese, spinach and cheese, and almond croissants. You should come by 11 for the largest selection (earlier if it's the weekend). There's no rhyme or reason to the crowds here. I've been here at 10 a.m. and there was no one in line but at 10 p.m. last night the line was 8 deep for crepes. P.S. CASH ONLY/OUTDOOR SEATING ONLY

My family and I have been coming here every year for the past 10 years during our annual trip to Dewey Beach. This little French cafe is tucked away on Penny Lane, an adorable alleyway close to the end of Rehoboth Street, near the boardwalk. It's housed in a pretty little building with two serving windows--one for the crepes and one for everything else. The employees are almost all French (the cafe offers jobs to young French people in the summertime) and they're quite friendly. The food they offer is simple, but very French and absolutely delicious. Their crepes are perfectly made and can be filled with everything from Nutella and bananas to eggs and cheese--they're perfect for breakfast or a late night snack. Their breads are to die for--the various croissants they make are flaky, buttery, and by far the best croissants I've ever been able to find stateside. They offer a variety of sandwiches served on your choice of a croissant or baguette and each sandwich comes with a little side of thinly sliced carrots, tomatoes, and cucumbers drizzled in a lovely, tangy dressing. My favorite sandwich is the fresh baked turkey and cheese on a croissant--the turkey is fresh and sliced to the perfect thickness (nothing like the junk you get from the deli at the grocery store) and they put mounds of shredded cheese on top (I believe they use Swiss or Gruyere cheese, or something similar). My mom and cousins always enjoyed the chicken salad and my grandma used to get the shrimp salad, and every loves the baguettes and croissants. I've had just about every croissant they offer and adore them all, and I've enjoyed many of their desserts, including their Napoleons and Opera cakes. They have a covered and uncovered seating area, so don't worry about where to sit. They open early in the morning (8am) and are open late (10pm), but do be sure to come early in the day for the best selection of breads--they sell out very fast! They can do orders a day ahead--we've often ordered sandwiches on our last night in town and picked them up in the morning to have for lunch during the car ride home. If you're looking for authentically French, delicious, affordable food, this is the place to go. I highly recommend this little cafe!

Loved everything about this place besides the wait, but good things take time! Hubby and I ordered the Ham and Cheese, the Smoked Salmon, egg, cheese, chive and a Bannana and Nutella. All 3 were to die for. The cheese was wonderfully salty, the crepe chewy (even softer for the savory crepe over the sweet) and while we doubted we could eat 3 when we started, we made some room in the tummy. They're a little on the pricey side, so have your cash handy.

Incredible crepes, apathetic service. I have visited this establishment about 7-8 times over the last several years, and my experience has been fairly constant. While the crepes are top notch (seriously the best I've ever had), the exchange-student work force is extremely slow, and seemingly uncaring to customer satisfaction. It is not rare to see one lone employee making crepes for a line of several hungry customers, while other employees sit around doing nothing. This is absolutely a must see attraction along Rehoboth Avenue, but be prepared to wait if you visit during peak tourist hours.

Amazing crepes! Get there early, the line grows fast and it takes a while to make the crepes so you will be waiting a while and there aren't many places to sit

Couldn't be happier to have stumbled upon this place! Always come for their crepes it's so awesome watching them make the crepe in the window. The fruit is always perfect - our favorite is the banana, Nutella, and whipped cream combination!

Amazing crepes, have been here several times. As others have mentioned the line can be long, with a wait 30-45 minutes... but well worth it. They have a take out window only with a few outdoor tables. You might get nervous to see that all the tables are taken, but as people eat they will leave quickly. Crepe can be shared but can eat a whole one with a good appetite. Favorites for dessert are the lemon and strawberry/Nutella/whipped cream... for savory the ham/egg/cheese/tomato. Hit or miss for the long line, sometimes you can come back and the line will be pretty short. Came around 10pm for dessert crepes and we waited about 10 minutes.

Really good crepes made with the authentic French tools. Light and spongy, sweet or savory. I prefer the banana Nutella whipped cream crepe. But know ahead of time it's cash only and line is long! Always a great sign and worth the wait.

I've been coming to Cafe Papillon for as long as I can remember, and it never disappoints. Located down Penny Lane and reminiscent of a quaint French outdoor cafe, you will not find a better crepe in the state. The wait can be long, so come early when the sun is down or be prepared to bake in the summer! The service has been great every time - mostly foreign employees but they seem to take pride in what they do and understand English; everyone has been pleasant. The crepe prices generally range from $5-8, but without a doubt, they're worth the premium! I've been a customer for many years and plan to keep it that way for years to come.

Best place ever. Crepes are wonderful. And the are so smart about mixing their ingredients.

I loved the crepes, especially the strawberry, Nutella and whipped cream. The ham, egg, cheese and tomatoes were very good and savory too. I would definitely return. Just a small cute cafe and creperie in Pennywalk lane.

From the food to the quaint presentation, Café Papillon is an essential alternative to the hustle and bustle of Rehoboth's Boardwalk food. I'll be honest, I'm a huge fan of Nutella and their Nutella Banana Crepe capped an excellent end to an excellent day at the beach. You get to watch your order cooked right under your nose as the scents of excellent pastries waft through the air. I usually grab ice cream at the end of the night, but Café Papillon was a fantastic and reasonable alternative.

A little overrated but a solid French bakery/creperie. Crepes are mostly $7-8 and are a decent size and quality. I'd probably be more inclined to give them a higher rating if the crepes were a little cheaper. I tried a ham and cheese crepe which was good. I enjoyed sitting at one of their outdoor patio seats in the morning and eating it. For seven bucks I'd rather get something a little more substantial than a slice of deli meat ham and some shredded cheese in a soft crepe.

Coffee was good, not great, and not very hot...the crepes which you have to order separately in a different line (yes u read that right, separate line for coffee and crepes) were very tasty however bring your wallet because they cost as much as a sit down breakfast at a restaurant...in the end if your craving crepes you won't be disappointed

I had the ham and cheese crepe and it was very good. Prices are reasonable, most crepes between $6-8. Many choices from sweet to savory. The staff is French, which provides a nice allure to the business. The croissant was good, but not as good as what you would find in Montreal or Paris. Overall a nice cute little window store inside Penny Lane Mall.

This place has been around as long as I can remember! Tucked into a small space in Penny Lane, Café Papillion serves up crepes to order filled/topped with a variety of selections. The Nutella and banana crepe is one of my favorites. Since it has bananas it is a healthier dessert choice...Right??

Peaches and cream crépe is beyond delicious!

  • Steven D.

This is food worth waiting for! I say that because there is almost always a line. I recommend the banana, nutella, and whip cream crêpes and chai tea. The ham and cheese croissants are amazing as well. Crêpes are made by hand in front of you.

We ordered a ham and cheese crepe and a Nutella crepe. Both were delicious, but I really liked the cheese they used in the ham and cheese crepe, making it my favorite.

I love this little place! I've been coming to Rehoboth since I was a child and Cafe Papillion is high on our to-do list every time. The crepes are delicious and the fillings are wonderful and fresh! I love the salmon, chive, and sour cream crepe, and also the strawberries, brown sugar, and sour cream crepe. Once they honored my request for peaches instead of strawberries and I couldn't have been happier! The staff is friendly and the service is quick and with a smile.

We've been going to Rehobeth for 15+ years and no trip goes without a visit for crepes. One of my favorite places in Rehobeth. It's a little stand with two people working so sometimes the line and wait can be long but I assure you it's worth the wait!!!!! Ham and cheese , Banana, sour cream are my favorite. I could eat them all day long!!!

Creperie is one of our must stop places in Rehoboth. Line can move slow, but you can't rush the high quality food they have. Wish there was more seating. But otherwise, top notch food.

It's the perfect combination of tasty French pastries and the beach. Cafe papillon has now provided me a great experience of sitting on the beach with a hot tea and a stellar croissant. My favorites include the spinach and cheese croissant but not far behind to add a sweet tinge is the sweet creme croissant. I've now found a new tradition while at Rehoboth.

I simply cannot help myself. Nearly every single morning while I am in Rehoboth, I get breakfast from Cafe Papillon's truly outstanding crepe cooks. Their crepes are soft and delicious, and the fillings are a delicious as they are varied. I can't help myself, but if I'm totally honest I really don't want to. This is a must try.

Found this little place one morning and endured the line which is long and constant from 8:00 am thru lunch. Very much worth the wait. There is one line for croissants/coffee and one line for crepes. If you are going for the crepes bring your own coffee otherwise you will have to wait in two very long lines. Something papillon should address. Going back next time we come to Rehoboth. Minus one star for the coffee service. Don't miss it!

This place is somewhat off the beaten path in Rehoboth, but it is worth leaving the boardwalk and main strip of town. Surrounding by quaint shops and located in a small cobblestone alleyway, Cafe Papillon has some of the best, and largest, dessert crepes I have ever had. Unfortunately I only discovered the cafe at the end of my trip, otherwise I would have been able to sample more of their menu. However, during my visit I had both the Nutella/strawberry/cream and the blueberry/cream crepe. It is unique because you are able to watch the server prepare the crepe right in front of you - I mean it, a mere 6-inches away! Plus, the server that helped my girlfriend and I was quite friendly - always a positive! Either stop by for breakfast (they open at 8AM) or save room for dessert. This place is a must when in town.

After coming to Rehoboth for years, I finally stopped here on a recent visit. I'm so glad we did! We just wanted a little snack (that's what we tend to do at the beach!) so we shared a strawberries and creme crepe. After waiting about ten minutes in line it was totally worth it! The strawberries were fresh and actually tasted like what strawberries should taste like! The setting is really nice. It's located in Penny Lane, a little alley off of Rehoboth Ave. Lots of tables and chairs (probably about one dozen tables). Can't wait to go back!

We've been to Rehoboth Beach over half a dozen times and too bad I discovered this place only recently. Already looking forward to our next year trip and I will for sure make sure I eat at this place every morning for breakfast and maybe even for afternoon snack. If you visit this place in the morning, the lines there are enough to tell you that this place must be special. The crepe's are as good as they can be and they have fresh baked pastries which are coming out of oven right in front of you. I only tried the Chocolate croissant as I was full after two Crepes. Don't miss a visit to this place when you are on the beach. It's just a walk from the boardwalk and is located between some very nice shops with lot of sitting area. The place has a very romantic setting to enjoy your food away from the boardwalk crowd.

I went for the crepes, but there was a line at 8 am, so I opted for the croissants. They were excellent! So was the coffee. I'd definitely go back again.

Went here for lunch based on recommendations from both yelp and a guidebook. Maybe the crepes and croissants are good, but the sandwiches are terrible and nothing like what what you'd get in France. I ordered a ham and cheese sandwich, which was basically two slices of ham on a stale baguette topped with 1/2 pound of shredded cheese (wtf?), lettuce, tomato, shredded carrots, and a mustard vinaigrette. It looked like some weird fusion food--like a cross between a gringo taco joint and a French bakery. [Scroll through the pictures. There's a picture of the sandwich on there.]

The first brilliantly sunny day of summer, I trek down to Rehoboth Beach at the crack of dawn and park right in front of Penny Alley, where I immediately go straight to Cafe Papillion. You can order in French if you do so please, they employ only French girls & gars here. All of their pastries are divine; their coffee tasty and rich, and their crepes are delicious. It's a must-stop for anyone going to the beach.

Meh. The crepes are fine, a bit on the thick , doughy side. They were incredibly overpriced with even the most basic varieties (little bit of sugar please?) costing around $4. I don't plan to head back. The creperie itself is located on a small side street. It's housed in a stand with outdoor seating to the side and manned by some adorably crabby teens complaining and poking fun at customers in French. There's always a line.

This place is as much about atmosphere and ambience as it is about crepes, which are incidentally delicious. Tucked away in a narrow, little alley, "Penny Lane," Cafe Papillon is surrounded by cute shops, and has a vaguely French feel in the outside seating area (emphasis on "vaguely"). French students make the crepes, and seem to enjoy making a show of it, and engaging in chit chat at the same time. The lines are always long, but that makes the crepe you've waited for 30+ minutes that much more scrumptious.

Ive been coming to this place for the past 20 years or so (however long its been open.) Although I didnt start getting the crepes until the last 7 years or so... My family's all time favorite to get here is the almond croissant, soo good. Unfortunately if you show up past 10 you have a very small selection. (This morning they had some raspberry & cheese, spinach & cheese, 1 butter, 1 almond, and a few sweet cheese croissants left...) The crepse are good too, I like their sweet crepes but was not a huge fan of the savory. I think they might use swiss cheese which I don't like much.

This is one of my very favorite places to come to in Rehoboth. Amazing crepes and pastries in a relaxed atmosphere.

It isn't summer in Rehoboth until we've ridden our bikes down to Cafe Papillon in the morning. One of us stops at Lingo's to get a newpaper, another waits for a patio table to become available, and the third gets in line to wait to order. There are two windows, one for baked goods and drinks, the other only for crepes, which you watch being prepared. We tend to end up in the crepe line. I usually stick with the fresh-squeezed lemon and sugar, although when peaches are in season that one is tempting. Ham, cheese and tomato is quite filling but still a bit delicate. Good coffee makes the morning meal complete. This establishment was begun in the early '70's on another street by two French women who made RB their summer business location. They still hire French kids to come run the place in the summer.
